Let Me Tell You a Quick Story
A story of how I got out of that vicious cycle.
By the way, that's a picture of me when I was a fresh graduate out of university (where I almost failed my degree) After coming back to Hong Kong, I was so poor I couldn't afford a decent meal. At one point all I had was 2 rolls of Oreos for 2 days, while waiting for my paycheck.
To be honest, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. All I wanted was to pay the bills.
Over the next 7 years, I changed 7 jobs times! Almost as soon as I was employed. At my 2nd job, I went up to China to a relative's factory to work. Monday to Friday 9am to 12am.
Over 9 months, I lost 10kg (25lbs).
Everyone was asking me what I was doing. I was so embarrassed didn't want to answer them. I was so broke that for dinner with my girlfriend, we had to split a $1.30 bowl of wanton noodles.
My Breakthrough
Eventually I went into recruitment and got my breakthrough.
I realized why it was so difficult to get hired and hold down a job all those years. It was because recruiters and hiring managers had a weapon for filtering out candidates. This was called the ATS system.
If your application's merits don't match their ATS system's criteria, your application was immediately thrown away.
You wouldn't even get a chance to make an impression.
It's not your fault...
You weren't given the frameworks for navigating your way through this maze. Chances are you don't have a perfect resume or CV, and most of us don't.
You didn't go to any prestigious institution or get Magna Cum Laude.
At the same time, you shouldn't let that deter your resolve to secure the dream job you have always wanted.
But if your application get's sorted out before a human could set eyes on it, there's ABSOLUTELY no chance you will get an interview.
Unless you bypass the ATS altogether. By going through a 'BACKDOOR.'
We were taught since young to follow the rules. Not to stir the pot too much. It is through this lens that has held us back.
Finding Your Backdoor
The reality is that even without an ATS system, recruiters usually have a number of candidates in mind. By the time they get around to checking CVs and Resumes, they have probably already made up their mind on who to suggest to the hiring manager.
Which means, that application you worked so hard to get right. Well, it was probably tossed out before it was even read.
That's the saddest part of it.
You have at least TWO things against you: the ATS system and the recruiter
All of this before a single interview is scheduled.
The solution?
Work your way around the need to send your CV or resume in the first place. You will be playing a losing game. A game that very few have any hope of winning.
